These pop rock heroes are heavily rooted in New Wave and 1960s rock and roll, as well as other styles ranging from post-punk to dance pop. Formed by Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, and Cindy Wilson in Athens, GA (before Athens was Athens), their positive, enthusiastic, slightly oddball party band vibe was a huge influence for pop bands like the Barenaked Ladies, the Tom Tom Club and the New Young Pony Club.

The B52's tell tall tales, glorify wild youth, and celebrate wild romance with the best of them, drawing influence from similar groups like the R.E.M., the Talking Heads, The Cars and Devo. The "guy vs. gals" call-and-response-type vocals and the campy ‘60s pop styles found in the hit songs “Love Shack,” “Rock Lobster,” "Strobe Light," "Private Idaho," and "Good Stuff,” are just as much a trademark as the loyal dance party that follows them around the world every year on lengthy tours.
